Irish grocery market sales increase by 3.5% over Christmas period

The latest figures from Kantar show that SuperValu has retained its position as the largest grocery retailer in Ireland over the Christmas period. For the 12 weeks to 3 January 2016, including the busy Christmas period, year-on-year sales for the Irish retail grocery market grew by 3.5% according to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel. This is the strongest growth in the Irish retail grocery sector since January 2009.

Supermarkets sales grow at rate not seen since boom times

A happy Christmas for all the State’s major retailers saw the retail market grow by 3.5 per cent over the festive season as shoppers relaxed their purse strings. The latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland for the 12 weeks to January 3rd point to a strong uplift for the Irish grocery market resulting in overall market growth not seen since January 2009.

Brand trust key for consumers according to Love Irish Food study

Price is no longer the key driving factor in the branded food and drink buying habits of Irish shoppers, according to new research. Trust in the brand, country of origin and local provenance are now the top priorities, according to the study commissioned by Love Irish Food.

According to the latest Consumer Insights report from Empathy Research, almost half (46%) of Irish adults think pre-packed meals prepared by a supermarket’s deli are better quality than branded pre-packed meals found on the shelves.

Adults watch a day’s TV every week

TAM Ireland/Nielsen TV audience figures for last year show that the average Irish adult watches 3½ hours every day, or over 24 hours a week. It is two minutes more per day than in 2014. Live TV viewing as it is scheduled accounts for 90 per cent of all viewing time, with just 10 per cent time-shifted, with PVR recordings on Sky+, Virgin Horizon, VCR or DVD.

November Sales Suggest Strong Christmas Period, Says Retail Ireland

Positive November sales figures suggest a strong Christmas period for retail, according to Retail Ireland. The total value of retail sales (excluding sales of cars and sales in bars) was up 4.8% on the previous November, with volume of sales rising by 9.2% over the same period.

Have post-Christmas sales lost their appeal?

New figures from the UK show that high street shopping figures from Monday to Friday of last week fell by 3% when compared to the same period in 2014. Research published by Springboard shows that this is in contrast to a jump of 6.2% experienced during the previous year.
