SuperValu has remained top of the league when it comes to share of the Irish grocery retailer market. The latest supermarket share figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland, published today for the 12 weeks ending 6 December, show that SuperValu remains Ireland’s largest grocery retailer as Christmas approaches. This is a critical time for supermarkets in the run-up to the busiest time of the year.

December 23 Set To Be Busiest Shopping Day This Christmas

According to payments technology company Visa Europe, tomorrow, Wednesday the 23rd of December is set to be the busiest in-store shopping day this Christmas. Visa Europe based its predictions on up-to-the-minute spending data and Christmas spending trends from previous years. Conor Langford, Ireland Country Manager at Visa Europe, said; “Irish retailers will benefit from a last minute rush of shoppers who still have gifts and groceries to purchase for Christmas.

Christmas in Retail

Christmas is just around the corner! And this year it’s set to be the best festive season for retailers and businesses since 2008, as it is expected a rise of over 3.5pc on Christmas spending.

According to the latest Consumer Confidence report from Nielsen, consumer confidence is at its highest level since the beginning of the recession (93%), which will help retailers and businesses to have the busiest festive period in years.

Webloyalty and Ibec had recently launched their Christmas report and at CPM we wanted to share some of the most interesting figures we’ve found in their studies.

Discounters Account For More Than Half of Grocery Ad Spend In Third Quarter

The latest Supermarket Ad Tracker* report from Checkout, produced in association with Nielsen, has found that Aldi and Lidl continue to outspend their more mainstream grocery rivals when it comes to advertising, with both retailers collectively accounting for more than half of grocery ad spend in the third quarter.

Wine sales suggest Ireland putting prosecco years behind it

Bond investors looking for a bit of insight into Ireland’s economic recovery might want to talk to Dublin vintner Pierre Chapeau. Originally from Cognac in southwest France, Chapeau has run French Paradox in Ballsbridge for the past 15 years, so he’s seen the boom and the bust. He expects Christmas sales this year to rise about 20 percent from 2014.

Irish people are buying more organic food (but it’s not back to pre-recession levels yet)

The Irish organic retail market has grown 9% so far this year, but is not yet back to pre-recession levels, according to Bord Bia. Speaking at a hearing of the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture this week Eileen Bentley, Bord Bia, Entrepreneurship Manager said the value of the Irish organic retail market is just over €110m and is approximately 1% of the overall food and drink market in Ireland.

November sales ring up record high thanks to Black Friday and Cyber Monday

The latest Visa Europe Irish Consumer Spending Index reveals the largest growth in face-to-face spending, it has ever recorded, as Black Friday helped drive a 6.6% rise in spending last month.

Retail Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the retail sector, today published its Christmas Retail Monitor 2015, with key indicators pointing to the best Christmas for the retail sector since 2008. The monitor tracks key trends across the economy and the sector to give an insight into how they are likely to impact the key Christmas trading period.

Retail Ireland expects Christmas spending to rise to 2008 levels

Industry group Retail Ireland is predicting the country’s biggest December spending spree since Christmas since 2008. They reckon people will spend more than €4bn this month, compared to €3.9bn last year.
